Encode/Transcode
Encoding is one of the most important steps in determining the audio/visual quality of your video. 
The process is also referred to as conversion or converting. When post production is complete and your video is delivered, you may have a digibeta, beta, DvCam, HDCam or some other form of tape based media. Or perhaps your video tape archive exist as one of these formats. During the encoding process, the video is converted from this tape based format to a file based format that can reside on a computer hard drive. The resulting file can be in any number of formats like an AVI file or a Quicktime file. Within these formats there are different types of compression that can be applied. If you already have the finished file, an AVI, Quicktime etc., the process of converting that video file is called transcoding.
